The summer of 2024 provided a unique opportunity for ten students to participate in the British Chamber of Commerce Taipei (BCCT)—UK Renewables Committee (UKRC) Internship Programme. As the main sponsor, Sulmara proudly hosted two of these students, supporting their professional development throughout the 12-week programme.
James Hope, Sulmara's Regional Director of Eastern Hemisphere, had the privilege of attending the closing event in taipei, where he heard firsthand about the interns' experience.
One of our interns, Jack Chen, shared his thoughts, saying, "The internship programme was well-planned, yet flexible enough to accommodate interns from different academic backgrounds. The training courses, which offered insight into offshore working life and the fundamentals of offshore surveying, were essential in helping us connect with the industry. Beyond the organised training, we were free to explore various tasks, allowing us to share our experience in a way that aligned with our individual career goals.”
In addition to gaining valuable work experience, the students were tasked with creating a video titled "A Day in the Life of a UKRC Intern." Their creativity and teamwork were showcased as they competed for the chance to have their video used to promote next year's programme. We're thrilled to share that Sulmara intern Tracy Lin's group produced the winning entry - view here.
Reflecting on her time with Sulmara, Tracy said: "It is no exaggeration to say that sulmara is a role model for surveying companies. I gained so much hands-on experience from senior engineers, who were always willing to guide and support the next generation. I can't express enough how fulfilling every day at Sulmara has been. I truly enjoy working here!"
At Sulmara, we believe in empowering future talent, offering real-world experiences that help students build skills they can take back to their studies and carry with them into their careers. Our commitment to nurturing young professionals remains strong—this year, we've hired a 2023 intern, Yu-Fan Tao, who will be joining our Taipei office after completing our six-week program at our Glasgow head office and Aberdeen.
Yu-Fan Tao remarked, "The joint internship program provided me with valuable insight into the industry and opened the door to many new opportunities. Through this experience, I discovered the limitless possibilities I could pursue within the field, inspiring me to rejoin Sulmara after graduating in August. I'm now excited to be part of the team as a graduate surveyor."
Sulmara's focus on developing talent continues with two intakes of graduate surveyors for 2024, bringing our total to 12, eight of whom are women. All our graduates undergo a comprehensive training program, where they immerse themselves in Sulmara's culture, receive essential training, and gain hands-on experience by working closely with our more experienced people.
